Thomas Patrick Tierney

Thomas P. Tierney, Sr., Western Hills, and formerly from Mt. Adams died on Sunday, June 1, 2025, age 92, surrounded by family at home. Tom is predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Ruth (nee Kallmeyer) Tierney. Tom said that marrying Ruth was the best thing that ever happened in his life. Tom is survived by his devoted children: Thomas Tierney, Jr., Patricia Tierney and Jayne Tierney, as well as granddaughter “Jenner”, grandson Robby ( his wife, Stacy) Schlensker, and three great-grandchildren, Gwendolyn, Fiona and Kingston Hines.

Tom was predeceased by his parents, Mark W. Tierney, Sr. and Margaret (Peggy) Casey Tierney, as well as his six siblings: Winifred (the late Edward) Fisher, Mark (Carolyn) Tierney, Jr., Margaret (the late Robert) Hering, Josephine (the late Jack) Ruth, James (Shirley) Tierney, and Robert Tierney. Tom leaves behind many cherished nieces, nephews and friends.

A longtime Green Township resident, Tom had been active for more than 30 years as a volunteer and at times a member of the board of trustees and executive committee of Bayley Place Retirement Community. At Bayley, he was an organist, Eucharistic Minister, and helped with computers, as well as functioning as auctioneer at times for their annual fund raising. In 2005, Bayley Place recognized Tom as outstanding Volunteer of the Year, and in 2013 Tom and his wife, Ruth, were again honored for their years of service and contributions to Bayley Place. Since 1980, Tom and Ruth had been members of St. Lawrence Church.

After attending grade school in Mt. Adams, Tom graduated from Purcell High School in 1948 at age 15. Many years later in 1986, he was honored as an “Outstanding Among All” graduate of Purcell. After graduation, he started working in the mail room of the headquarters of The Kroger Company. In 1951, Tom enlisted in the Air Force for four years where he learned the emerging field of data processing / “IT”, including 11 months stationed with the Fifth Air Force in South Korea. He received several commendations for his efforts in developing data systems which were also propagated throughout the Air force.

After discharge from the Air Force at a rank of Staff Sergeant, Tom worked four years at Procter and Gamble. Next, in 1958 he joined the Lindner family enterprises in Cincinnati where he would enjoy working with them for the next 32 years ascending through the corporate structure, attaining such titles as Secretary and Controller of American Financial Corporation. At the time of his retirement in 1990, Tom was Senior Vice President of Great American Insurance Company, overseeing various “Information Technology” departments.

Tom loved his Irish heritage. He traveled to Ireland many times as his mother and paternal grandfather came to the USA from Ireland. Active for more than 35 years in the Cincinnati chapter of the Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, he was on that chapter’s Board of Directors since 1999 and served in other positions such as Banquet Chairman, and also as the chapter’s President in 1998-1999. Tom served on the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army, with a special interest in Camp SWONEKY, a summer camp for underprivileged children.

On June 11, 2025, Visitation will be at 9:30 A.M., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 A.M., at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 3450 Lumardo Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45238. B.J.
