November 6, 1945 - April 8, 2024
It’s been a long goodbye to my dad, who had suffered from the extremely debilitating effects of Alzheimer’s disease for the past 6 years. I’m grateful that he is finally at peace. Today my mother and I packed up his belongings from the nursing home where he had been for a little over a year. There were a lot of tearful goodbyes to his friends there, as well as to the nurses and nurse aides. People have been so kind.
My dad had a good life, and he had a great many interests that he embraced along the way. He taught Sociology at Thomas More University, he was a commercial and aerial photographer by trade, and later taught flight lessons on twin engine Cirrus aircraft. He played the guitar, clarinet and saxophone. He drew very well, as I recall a sketchbook he had from college with some fantastic drawings in it. He was a serious road biker in the 1980s, and he also enjoyed cross country skiing. My dad had a passion for his interests and was not particularly competitive in any of those arenas. He once told me, “virtue is its own reward”.
He loved his friends and family, and he adored and cherished my mom. They would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary this coming June.
I will be forever grateful for my dad and the example of an honorable life he led. It’s like my cousin Gust said to me: "the world is a less interesting place without him in it."
