Mildred Hellmann

HELLMANN, Mildred J. (Nee Nesvold) Beloved wife of the late Paul X. Hellmann. Daughter of the late Jack and Clara Nesvold. Loving mother of David (Judy), Jerome, Denis (Mimi), Gregory (Linda), Martin (deceased), Teresa, and Catherine. Devoted grandmother of Michelle, Juli, Kristin, Emily, Max, and Savannah. Proud great-grandma of Chase. Dear sister of Donald (Helen) Nesvold, John (Edna) Nesvold, Robert (Joyce) Nesvold, Donna (Stan) Thoe, and Judy (Robert) Davis. Cherished friend of Sue Eichhorn and John Diether. Born and raised on a farm in northern Wisconsin, Mildred graduated from St. Luke's School of Nursing in Duluth, MN, the first member of her family to go to college. She served her country as a World War II Army nurse, rising to the rank of 1st Lieutenant, while serving in hospitals in the US, the Philippines, and Korea. Even after growing up in northern Wisconsin, she said that winter in Korea was the coldest in her life! She worked at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN after her time in the service. She met her future husband, Paul, when he was a patient at an army hospital in Missouri. He loved her calm nature and how unflappable she was. (Her kids never saw her lose her cool; she had boundless patience with her large family.) Paul and Mildred later corresponded and credited the US Army Postal Service with their budding relationship. Both of them continued this tradition by regularly writing letters to their children and grandchildren. They were married 55 years until his passing in 2003. Every evening, they would enjoy a highball together and chat after Paul returned from his job as a school principal. He was able to devote himself to his career and his garden with Mildred's support. As very avid readers, she and Paul both inspired a love of reading to their kids. Mildred had a wonderful sense of humor, walked everywhere, had an unwavering faith, and enjoyed her evening Chardonnay. She was thrilled to visit Washington DC in 2015 with the first All-Women's Honor Flight. Although we will miss her terribly, we are grateful to have had so many wonderful years with Mom/Grandma (Starting at age 90, the correct number of candles were lit on her cake!), and we will continue to be inspired by her courage, fortitude, generous spirit, and kindness. Passed away on September 5, 2020 at 97 years of age. Due to Covid restrictions, services will be private.
