ACKERMAN, John Paul — known affectionately as "Paul" — passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family. He was 82 years old.
Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, Paul was the devoted son of the late Jack and Angela (née Olberding) Ackerman. He began his education at Our Lady of Victory School, then graduated from St. Xavier High School and Xavier University, where he earned a B.S. in Economics. He went on to serve his country with honor, concluding his military service as a First Lieutenant (1LT) in the United States Army. He exemplified leadership, duty, and unwavering commitment while stationed in Korea.
Paul began his career as a successful salesman in the early days of the information revolution, working for Singer Business Machines, where he rose to the roles of sales manager and then branch manager — a position that took him from Cincinnati to Milwaukee. Upon returning to Cincinnati, he co-founded Cincinnati Word Processing with his longtime friend Dave Russert. The company grew rapidly, employing nearly 100 people and handling sales and service of word processors and later computers from companies like IBM and Wang across Cincinnati, Dayton, Louisville, and Columbus. After many years of hard work and achievement, Paul retired early to focus on his family, a decision that reflected his deeply held values.
Paul is survived by his beloved partner, Debbie Watson, and his four sons, who were his greatest pride: Michael (Katie), Peter (Jenny), Matthew, and Andrew (Jamie). He was the cherished grandfather of Henry, Mabel, Noel, Adam, Jonah, Sawyer, and Wren—each of whom brought joy and light to his later years. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Barbara Lange (Larry) Kallmeyer and Jane (late Michael) Hoffman, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will miss his wisdom, loyalty, generosity, and unwavering sense of humor.
Paul was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Joan Ackerman, with whom he shared a deep and abiding love, and by his beloved sisters, Mary Angela (David) Samow and Martha (Larry) Swallow.
Paul lived life fully and intentionally, with a deep appreciation for both people and experiences. He was a longtime member of Western Hills Country Club and cherished countless golf trips with friends. He found peace on fishing trips—especially to Canada with family—and rarely missed his monthly poker games with close buddies. He nurtured a vibrant vegetable garden each summer and spent 23 years volunteering with Meals on Wheels after retiring. Paul’s extended family will fondly remember cookouts and clay pigeon shooting at Deer Creek, countless get-togethers to celebrate holidays or life events, and friendly games of bridge with loved ones. A consummate socialite, Paul was active in numerous clubs and associations and had a refined appreciation for the finer things in life. He was practical to the core—never one to spend frivolously—but happily enjoyed life’s luxuries when they came his way.
He will be remembered for his steady presence and unwavering dedication to family. Blunt, bold, and hilariously unfiltered—he made us laugh even when we probably shouldn’t have. Paul always kept those around him entertained. He lived life with integrity and left a lasting mark on all who knew him. He will be missed dearly by his family and friends.
