George Michael Scanlon passed away on December 18, 2018.
George was born on August 22, 1924 to John Francis (Frank) and Mary Gallin Scanlon in Somerset, Ohio.
He was the youngest of three brothers, both of whom predeceased him: John Francis II (Kathleen Trounce) and Father Paul John Dominic Scanlon, O.P.
George attended Holy Trinity School in Somerset and Aquinas High School in Columbus, Ohio. He enlisted in the Navy and was a Corpsman and medic in WWII, stationed on the USS Vulcan.
Upon his return from the war, he attended and graduated from Xavier University in Cincinnati in January 1950. He went right to work for Global Chemical, which later became Harshaw and worked for them his entire career. It was at this time that he met Jeanette Niedenthal, the love of his life. They were married at St. Louis Catholic Church in Batesville, Indiana on July 27, 1957.
Their long marriage was a partnership made in heaven. They shared interests in golf, visits to the Outer Banks, and shore fishing. George and Jeanette also shared a love of sports. George was an avid Xavier basketball fan, and Jeanette was a staunch Cincinnati Reds fan. Later in life they co-owned the gift store Rosebud Junction in Metamora, Indiana. George was the cheery Christmas greeter. They were also Friends of the Cincinnati Library, especially enjoyed the library garden that George and Jeanette tended for years. George was a parishioner of St. Vivian's Catholic Church in Cincinnati. George was also a member of the American Legion, Post 58, Somerset, Ohio.
George is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jeanette, and many nieces and nephews. If you ever had the pleasure of meeting George Scanlon, it's a memory you would never forget. George was the embodiment of a loving leprachaun and touched the heart of everyone he met. Many lovingly called him "Uncle George". He will be dearly missed by his family and countless friends.
Services will be at Bayley Place, 800 Bayley Place, Cincinnati, OH on Friday December 28. Viewing at 12:00pm, Funeral Mass at 1:00pm.
An additional Funeral Mass along with burial will take place at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Somerset, OH on Saturday, January 5th, 2019 at 11:00am.
