Dr. Harry Anthony Blaney, beloved husband of the late Patricia “Pat” Carroll Blaney (nee Carroll), father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, died January 29, 2024. Harry was born to Harry E. Blaney and Marcella Blaney (nee Wiechard) in Cincinnati on October 21, 1924. Harry is survived by his children, Jerri M. Blaney (Bruce Schmitt), Debbie A. Blaney (Jon Walker, MD), Michael C. Blaney (Susan Blaney, MD), Lyn B. Jevicky and Brian H. Blaney (Shelby Precourt); his grandchildren, Maj. Jesse Blaney Schmitt, USMC (Erika Schmitt (nee Eynetich)), Luke Walker, Maria Walker, James Blaney (Kate Schwenne), Megan Collins, MD (nee Blaney) (Wade Collins), Capt. Andrew Sultan, USAF (nee Blaney) (Ida Sultan), Oliver Jevicky, and Christina Jevicky; his great grandson, Forrest Collins, and a great-granddaughter expected June 2024; and his sisters-in-law, Jo Esdorn and Connie Widmer. He is preceded by his brother Donald J. Blaney, MD, sister-in-law Ellen Marx and his grandson, Matthew Carroll Blaney.
Harry attended St. Xavier High School, graduating in 1942. He then attended Xavier University until enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1943. Harry served on over 20 missions as a navigator on the B-29 “Je Reviens” based on Guam.
Returning to Cincinnati after World War II, he attended the University of Cincinnati and University of Cincinnati Medical School, earning his medical degree in 1951. During medical school he was briefly recalled by the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War to serve as a physician at Chanute AFB.
He married Pat in 1948 and with her raised their five children. He built a private medical practice in internal medicine and served as medical staff president of St. Francis / St. George Hospital. He was a long-time member of Western Hills Country Club and enjoyed regular golf games there with his friends. He also loved to ski, and treasured winter ski vacations in Colorado with his family.
Upon retirement he and Pat moved to Naples, Florida where he continued to golf and learned bridge under the tutelage of Pat. They traveled regularly to visit children and grandchildren and to golf with friends. His favorite vacations entailed gathering children and grandchildren from across the country. As Pat fell ill, they returned to Cincinnati where he cared for her until her death in 2017. On January 29, 2024, at the age of 99, in the home he and Pat built to raise their family 60 years ago, he left to join her.
Visitation will be Monday, February 5, 2024, at St. Simon the Apostle Church, 825 Pontius Rd, Cincinnati, Ohio 45233, from 10:00 AM until time of the celebration of The Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM.
