Asta Sigrun Mishurda

MISHURDA, Asta S. (Nee Asgeirsdottir), Beloved wife of the late Joseph Mishurda for 58 years. Loving mother of Nina (Paul) Roques, Birgir (Deborah) Mishurda, Mary Mishurda, Gloria (Michael) Herron, Paul (Allison) Mishurda and the late Joseph C. Mishurda. Mother in law of Jane Mishurda. Devoted grandmother of 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Also survived by her many nieces, nephews, other family and friends. Passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 26, 2025 at 94 years of age.  Asta was a proud daughter of Iceland, born in its capital city of Reykjavik in 1930. There she met and married Joseph Mishurda, while he was stationed there, and she returned with him to the United States. Together they settled in Cincinnati, Ohio where they made their home and raised their family.  A devoted housewife, she raised her children with love, gentleness and wisdom. Talented with her hands, she sewed clothes for her children when they were young, and her fine culinary skills included many Icelandic recipes. And as her children flew from the nest to start their own lives, she easily transitioned to mentor and friend, and warmly welcomed all new members of the family. She absolutely loved being a grandma, and all children were dear to her. She loved bringing joy to family and friends, especially at Christmas time, where her "Cookie Baking" operation was legendary; for several weeks in December she baked tin-full after tin-full of delicious Christmas Cookies, and sent them to family members all over the country.  Asta and Joseph began attending St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in 1960, and Asta remained a faithful member of the church until recent years. She was an active member of the Women's Club (KSS), and often helped fellow members get to church when needed.  Asta moved out of her home and entered Artis Memory Care Center of Bridgetown in 2018, and was a very involved resident of the Artis Community. As an excellent listener, and never one to be conflictive, she was a perfect Artis Ambassador and also participated in the "I CAN" Program, a community assistance network. She enjoyed singing, and learning new things in the Activities Room. Approachable and fun-loving, she had many friends at Artis amongst both residents and staff.  Throughout her life, Asta was quite frugal regarding anything for herself, yet endlessly generous to those around her. She had an independent spirit, never wanting to be a burden to others. And with her strong moral compass, she always strived to do what's right. In spite of the challenges life threw her way, she always remained positive and cheerful.   Asta's legacy is that she impacted so many lives, in so many different ways.  Visitation at MEYER FUNERAL HOME, 5864 Bridgetown Road, on THURSDAY from 9:00 AM until time of Eulogy at 10:30 AM.
