Alan J. Kolts passed away suddenly and peacefully on April 19, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family, at the age of 68. Born in Syracuse, NY, he was the son of the late Harvey S. and Phyllis (née Decker) Kolts. He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 19 years, Elaine Kolts (née Busher).
Alan is also survived by his brothers, Barry Kolts of Houston, MO, and Dean Kolts of Syracuse, NY; his sister, Vicki Lee Kolts of Endwell, NY; his sister-in-law, Mary (Joe) Kasavich of Bainbridge, OH; his brothers-in-law, Raymond (Ann) Busher of Cleveland, OH, Thomas Busher of Fort Worth, TX, and Mark (Collette) Busher of Pittsburgh, PA; nine nieces and nephews; and many extended family members and dear friends.
Born on November 5, 1956, Alan grew up in the Eastwood neighborhood of Syracuse and graduated from Henninger High School in 1974. During high school and for many years thereafter, he apprenticed as an audio engineer at the classical music radio station WONO, recording performances of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. He went on to attend the Rochester Institute of Technology, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. Alan built a successful career with General Electric and Lockheed Martin before his retirement.
Following retirement, Alan and his wife settled in Cincinnati, OH, where he enjoyed many hobbies, including woodworking, gardening, landscaping, and bird watching. He possessed a keen sense of adventure, a wonderful sense of humor, and a deep appreciation for music of all genres. A devoted sports enthusiast, Alan was a passionate supporter of Syracuse University athletics and a lifelong Major League Baseball fan. While he remained steadfast in his loyalty to the New York Yankees, he also came to embrace the Cincinnati Reds with great enthusiasm.
Alan will be remembered for his intelligence, wit, and kindness. He was an irreplaceable member of his family and a devoted and loving husband.
A private memorial service will be held in Cincinnati, OH. A celebration of life gathering will be held at a later date in Syracuse, NY.
